Watching The Wheels

I seem to have lost a month. How careless of me! As you may have spotted from the recent hiatus, I’ve been ill and just didn’t feel up to blogging. They told me the virus would take 6 weeks to get out of my system – and they were right!

Firstly, I’d like to thank all of you who have wished me well, both here and on Facebook. Good blogging friends are irreplaceable! Also, a huge ‘thank you’ to everyone who has visited my blog while I’ve been absent. I’ve been stunned by the levels of views, likes, comments and new follows even at a time where I haven’t given you anything new.

So, what have I been doing? The short answer is….not much, if I’m honest. In the early stages the viral infection caused me so much pain and soreness that I didn’t feel like doing anything. I then got into a routine of watching far more daytime TV than is good for anyone’s sanity! If the programmes don’t get to you the adverts will – what exactly does it mean to be ‘so moneysupermarket’ anyway, other than being a total moron behaving inappropriately? But mostly I’ve been a watcher of life and events as they have been unfolding: that poses risks to our sanity too!

We are living in strange, unsettling times. I wrote a piece some months ago about politicians’ need to tell lies to get what they want. Recent events, particularly in the US, have shown how spectacularly I underestimated their capacity for untruths. Or ‘alternative facts’ as we are now informed they should be called. And it seems I was wrong to hope that the Orange One would tone down his views after being elected. But he had record crowds for his inauguration, everyone loves his executive orders, the protests against his ‘it isn’t a Muslim ban’ are orchestrated by paid stooges, so all is going swimmingly well, isn’t it!

One thing I haven’t done during my absence is watch any so-called ‘reality TV,’ as these programmes bear no relation to any form of real life that I know or would want to be a part of. Even the names can be misleading: be honest, how many of the participants in the recent series of ‘Celebrity’ Big Brother had you heard of? It’s not as though anyone from a reality show has ever gone on to succeed at anything in real life, is it? Oh, wait……. It would appear that the American people have elected as their President (or POTUS45 as he is known) the former host of their version of the Apprentice. Please, UK, don’t even think about doing the equivalent of that here! The thought of Lord Sugar running this country fills me with almost as much dread as the thought of the Orange One on his mission to destroy the world in four years or less. And a quick aside: why do they call him POTUS45 yet they try to give the Superbowl a touch of class by listing it with Roman numerals, i.e. Superbowl LI? Shouldn’t they try to give their President some class too? POTUS VL has a certain ring to it, I think. But then again, no matter how hard you polish a turd it’s still a turd…. although he may have given some meaning to what I think it means to be ‘so moneysupermarket’ – see above for the definition!

There have been some good points in my recent absence, though, in respect of this blog. My post Mental Health Matters seems to have taken off like none of my posts has ever done before. I wrote it 4 months ago and it is still receiving ‘likes’ on an almost daily basis – over 90 now. I’m grateful to all of you for this, as it is an important issue. I now have over 500 followers for this blog, and more are joining every day – again, my thanks to you all! This has encouraged me to keep writing about the topic which seems to be attracting most of you – mental health – particularly since the UK Government’s recent announcement of more support for mental health treatments. A post on that will follow in the not too distant future. Spoiler alert: I’m not convinced by them!

My Facebook friends will have noticed that I have been sharing many more political posts recently. No one has unfriended me yet, but I suspect that some may have hit the ‘mute’ button! Taking time out to become an observer of life has filled me with many fears for our country – Brexit means being a poorer relation with a totally uncertain future – and for the world as a whole. Can any of us sleep soundly knowing that the nuclear codes are in the very small hands of a petulant, thin-skinned, childish, bullying tyrant who clearly hasn’t the slightest clue what his new job actually means? In my own small way I’m trying to do my bit against him – I’ve followed him on Twitter and have taken to retweeting his comments with my own added. I don’t know if this will work, but I’m hoping he blocks me as I could wear that as a badge of honour!

I chose the title for this piece from a song by a man who was sufficiently committed to stand up and protest for what he believed in. The anti-Trump protest movement in the US and around the world needs to keep doing the same, or we’ll be watching the wheels fall off, not go round:

I’m off to catch up on all your blogs – I’ve missed a lot in the past month or so! See you again soon.

  1. I’m SO glad you feel better … I have thought of you often and hoped you were mending. I hope it feels good to have been missed which you clearly were and I look forward to lots of good Clive–dom (or is it Wis-Clive) as we move forwards. Sadly, I fear there will be much politicking to feed your pen but I also look forward to more of your work on Mental Health which is what drew me to you in the first place.

“But then again, no matter how hard you polish a turd it’s still a turd” lol!

MY sentiments exactly – and I am an American, btw – but NOT one who expected Agent Orange to be anything other than what he has always been – a self-aggrandizing money-grubber who will say or do anything to support his ego and line his pockets. Oh, and I’m one of the majority voters who did NOT vote him in, in case you couldn’t guess that already.

We’re not ALL nuts here – but those in the Electoral College most certainly are – and those who just confirmed THE least qualified candidate *ever* for arguably THE most important post in the nation – Secretary of Education. She didn’t even bother to cram for her confirmation hearing – so certain was she that Cabinet positions had been bought and paid for. The Pencil (vPOTUS) rubber stamped his boss’s desire by casting the tie-breaker vote – another first, btw, in this county’s doomed to be short history if McDonald has his way.

I’m so sorry to read that you’ve been ill, and I hope this post means you are finally feeling better. I am not feeling well today myself for a completely different reason. I tied one on last night, upon hearing the news. It was either that or slit my wrists!

Those of us still hanging on to a shred of sanity in the used-to-be-good-ole’ USA really appreciate all the jabs from around the world, btw. We’re counting on you to keep it up – so THANKS for this post.

If you need a laugh, go to YouTube and search for “America First.” It seems that every nation in the world (and MARS!) has posted a video “introduction” to the orange menace – ala Saturday Nite Live’s “news broadcasts” if you have seen any of those — all vying to be #2, btw.

I believe the one from Holland started the craze – and the others reference it, so if you have time and interest for only a few, I’d do that one and the one, then the one from Mars. VERY clever.

The web-published version of The Wall superbowl commercial is very touching and well worth the time to watch (tho’ censored and truncated live).

    • Many thanks for your good wishes. You’ve summed him up very well, and his continuing show of how unsuited he is to be President is astounding. Unpresidented, you might say. Cabinet posts that have been paid for by donations, far-right advisers pulling his puppet strings, a racist as AG. Where will it end, other than badly?

Thanks for the tip about videos. I’ve seen a few of the ‘us second’ ones, and look out every week for SNL. As far as I know it isn’t shown here but there are clips available almost instantly. I thought Alec Baldwin’s Trump couldn’t be bettered, until I saw Sean Spicer! They’re too close to the truth sometimes, but very funny. And boy do we need that at present.

      • lol “unpresidented”

Agree on the desperate need for humor. Clearly NOT a supporter, I have been fighting depression since November – and a trip around the blogs tells me I am not alone there.

Poking fun is also a wonderful under-the-radar way to cool emotional fires fomented by the man-child in charge. Ridicule will always be a more effective way to undercut his fear-mongering and rancor than angry protest, IMHO.

Imagine how effective he would [not] be if an entire audience guffawed when he spewed! After all, much of the rest of the world is already shaking their heads and chuckling (tho’ mostly at Americans for electing him – it doesn’t seem to be landing that he *lost* the popular vote). Everyone seems fearful of what he is likely to DO, however.

But wouldn’t it be a hoot to hear his “alternate facts” about being laughed off the podium?

      • His word, not mine!

We’ve always poked fun at our politicians – and they do provide a rich source of material. He doesn’t understand that, though he does seem to have stopped moaning at SNL recently. More concerned with his daughter’s business being treated SO unfairly!

The stupidity of your Electoral College system needs to be addressed. Losing by 2.8m votes yet getting an EC landslide is ridiculous. But then again, he didn’t lose the vote, did he? They were all illegals and fake voters 😉

      • BOY do I hate to hit “like” on this comment. We need new buttons!

He makes up an alternate “reality” to protect his ego – and seems to actually believe his own lies. How did this man ever run a company??? (besides the ones he ran into bankruptcy, I mean)

His anger at ridicule and anything not supporting his ideas makes sense in the context of a need for “narcissistic supply” – as does his impassioned defense of his “golden child.”

The overlap of his behavior with the DSM criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder is astounding – and enlightening.

I think *most* Americans hate the Electoral College system – as most politicians fail to recall that they are not duty bound to turn all votes over to state majority results.

Agree it needs to GO if America is going to continue to call itself a democracy – and never understood where it’s power base comes from.

      • I think we need an ‘I agree but that sucks’ button.

I’m no doctor but I know enough about personality disorders to recognise plenty of signs in him. He’s an egomaniac on the ride of his life, surrounded by people using him as their puppet to promote their own evil agendas. Anyone who thinks he has the best interests of the country in mind is as deluded as him – he just wants to make money. He clearly hasn’t separated himself from his business interests, his wife’s lawsuit shows blatantly how she wants to use being FLOTUS as a money making opportunity, and his tweet about Nordstrom would be laughable if it wasn’t evidence for him to be impeached. In case you didn’t know, no one in the U.K. would buy perfume labelled ‘Trump’ – it’s an alternative word for fart 😂

      • Fart? Nope, had no idea. I LOVE it!! I’m all in for that button too, btw.

Yesterday I drafted a post that might help explain why folks don’t flock to wake up and dump his coffee, given all – and maybe even a cogent theory of “alternative facts.”

[Why we hate to change our minds] posts Monday – shortly after midnight in New York, explaining cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias – briefly, and in language as “plain” as mine ever is. 🙂

A direct link will be available from the right sidebar until it “ages off” – which gives it more than a month or so to continue to position itself farther down the page.

  3. I am so glad your are back blogging and feeling better Clive. I am much more positive to president Trump than you are. I think so much hatred has been poured out on him that it is unbelievable that he can take it. We have been so used to left winged opinions since our youth that it is regarded as “Good” and “the Truth”, One of the News Medias I like to follow is Jay Sekulow a attorney, speaker, musician and conservative, Jewish Christian.

    • Many thanks Maria, it’s good to be back. As a student I was taught the phrase ‘behaviour breeds behaviour.’ After ‘winning’ the Presidency on his politics of hatred I think he deserves all he gets! For me it isn’t a question of left or right wing, more a question of decency and human compassion: two important things I believe he lacks.
